Masconomet Cheerleading is a cheerleading program offering instruction in cheers, stunting, jumps and tumbling for routines to be used during football games and at the Cape Ann Youth Football League (CAYFL) Competition/Exhibition in November, where all cheerleaders will participate.
Cheerleaders from the 5th grade level up compete, and the 3rd and 4th grade level exhibit.
The season begins on August 17th, and typically involves 2+ weeks of "training camp" practices, which may be 3-4 times/week at Pyebrook Park in Topsfield. Teams will be picked based on age and skill by the end of summer practice on August 28th.
During the season, practices are at the coaches' discretion and typically are scheduled 2-3 times/week at an indoor facility with appropriate cheer mats for safety.
There are approximately 9 scheduled weekend football games per cheerleading team. The Cheerleading schedule is dependent on the football schedule. If your child is on the A cheerleading team she/he will cheer for the A football team according to that schedule, and so on for each team.
There will be a league wide Competition and Exhibition on November 14th at Marblehead High School. Times to be announced.
As in prior years we are providing as much information as is available, however, please understand that certain things are beyond our control, and therefore some items may be TBD (To be determined). All items are subject to change.
The objectives of our program are the same as all Masconomet Youth Sports Programs:
We are required to submit final rosters to the Cape Ann League the first week of September. Registration is held at this time so that rosters can be finalized before
the end of school and all necessary information is collected (copies of Birth Certificates for new participants). Once people disband for the summer it is difficult to
make contact over the summer. We have had situations where the necessary items were not provided and the Cape Ann League did not allow these children to participate.
This is not within our control locally and we do not have the power to make exceptions.
Additionally team sizes are limited to 24 cheerleaders per team. Early registration is necessary so that teams can be organized accordingly.
Registration fees include season long use of uniform (skirt and vest) and other administrative costs to run the program. The fee also covers the cost to rent practice
space at Masco.
Note: We endeavor to keep our fees as low as possible while maintaining our goals and safety. We have projected enrollment, established a budget, and only charge
what is necessary to cover costs.
We will do a sign in of all registrants to make sure we have everyone's birth certificate and one parent for each child will need to sign a Waiver. We may decide to size
your child for a uniform at this time too. We should be able to answer any of your questions at this time.
Also our vendor, Universal Screening, will be there to take orders for items your child may need. Registration fees do not cover costs of cheerleading sneakers, cheerleader
briefs-known to some as lollipops, white no-peek socks, and nylon zip back turtlenecks. All of these items are mandatory. (Any all white cheerleading shoe is acceptable.) If
cheerleaders have previously purchased the team zip-back nylon turtleneck and lollipops, these do not need to be repurchased. Black pants must also be purchased for use at
cold games; however, these do not need to be purchased from our vendor, but will be available for purchase.
Our vendor is also offering a sweatshirt, cheerleading bags, a jacket and sweat suit. These purchases are completely discretionary.
Due to lead times in ordering uniforms and other apparel (noted below) we must order early. Some items have a 12 to 14 week lead-time. We recognize that it is difficult,
particularly when order sneakers for growing children, however, it is unavoidable.
Mandatory purchase for participants who do not have these from a prior season
(Offered from our vendor for convenience)
Discretionary purchases
We have determined that the only effective way to communicate and collect information and funds on a program of this size is to utilize technology available on the
Internet. We realize that some may need to adapt. Please recognize that this is a program comprised solely of volunteers and every effort needs to be made to streamline
administration, yet communicate effectively.
Depending on enrollment, tryouts for teams A, B and C may be necessary. No matter which team your child is placed on, she/he will receive the same quality instruction
and a chance to compete at the CAYFL Competion.
Cheerleading is like any other sport. Practices typically begin 2-3 weeks prior to the first game so the cheerleaders can learn new cheers and half-time routines.
This way at the first game the cheerleaders will be prepared. Football games usually start the 1st week of September.
The summer days are necessary to give us enough time to familiarize the cheerleaders with the program and to conduct tryouts and team placement. We are using a mid-week,
later afternoon summer schedule to allow for daytime family activities and long weekends.
We will be holding two-hour practices in late August as previously mentioned. During the season, we will have practices mid-week, with an additional practice session added
on Saturdays starting September 27th. Younger squads generally have an hour and a half to two hour practice once a week plus an additional Saturday practice starting
September 27th. Senior Squads (A, B and C) practice twice during mid-week for two hours each with additional Saturday practices starting on September 27th. Additionally,
attendance at a weekend football game for cheering is mandatory.
Games are on Saturday or Sunday.
Travel: We participate in the Cape Ann League and had games both home and away scheduled with Danvers, Lynnfield, Newburyport, Pentucket, Amesbury, Marblehead,
Hamilton-Wenham, North Reading, Winthrop, and North Andover. Our "home field" is Pye Brook Park in Topsfield.
The league is trying to schedule the competition/exhibition for November 1st, with November 8th being the second choice. We hold our End of Season
Celebration a week or two following competition.
Picture day is scheduled for Friday, September 12th. Time and location: TBD.
We hope that this Q & A has provided some valuable insight and information. If this does not answer your question, please send an e-mail to

Per CAYFL (Cape Ann Youth Football League) all games are mandatory for A and B and C squads, rain or shine. Cheerleaders need to be there unless the football
game is cancelled.
For D and JV teams, Masco uses the same guidelines as A, B and C teams.
